I’m a freelance writer, serving as a contributing editor for Discover, writer at large for Philadelphia and contributor elsewhere, including the Washington Post. I’ve lived in the Philadelphia area for 15 years, where I’ve covered pretty much everything—politics, courts, cops, crime, business and science. I’ve also got a deep and abiding interest in cultural issues, particularly dealing with how we handle religion, conspiracy theories and the paranormal. The great personal lesson for me in reporting is that everyone really does have a great story to tell, and I’ve yet to meet anyone—whether hero or villain—who hasn’t done the best they could. Sometimes, we are simply found wanting. And other times, we rise above any reasonable expectation people might have for us. I regard working in journalism as a tremendous honor: People entrust me with the most intimate details of their lives, and I have to do their stories justice.
